Who the Heck is Bad Robot Brain?

Bad Robot Brain in the flesh

By day, Matt Bryant is a mild-mannered husband, father, and web developer. By night, he transforms into the snarling artist known as Bad Robot Brain. He is a self-taught illustrator who’s been crafting grotesque, hilarious, and horrifying worlds since the moment he could hold a pen. From a quiet corner of the Midwest, Bad Robot Brain brings his strange inner worlds to life, one sketch at a time.

The Brains Behind the Monsters

Blending the weirdest parts of late-century youth culture—Garbage Pail Kids, Toxic Crusaders, X-Men comics, and TMNT cartoons—with industrial and heavy metal, Bad Robot Brain’s work is a visual love letter to skulls, slime, and subversive humor. With such eclectic inspiration, his style bounces between two extremes:

  • A lowbrow, cartoonish style packed with bulging eyes, absurdity, and self-deprecating wit
  • A dark, metal-inspired style filled with cross-hatched horrors, tentacles, and existential dread

Each piece reflects a sardonic worldview dripping in sarcasm. Whether he’s conjuring up something dreadful or delightfully dumb, his work is deeply personal and unapologetically weird.

By Weirdos, for Weirdos

The work of Bad Robot Brain isn’t for everyone. It’s not meant to be. This is art for the misfits, the metalheads, the weird, and the offbeat thinkers. If you see the beauty in the grotesque, or find yourself screaming into the void only to hear it laughing back, then Bad Robot Brain is for you.

What’s in Store

While illustration is his primary outlet, Bad Robot Brain can’t keep still for long. Whether he’s sculpting in 3D (then printing and painting the results) or crafting industrial beats and experimental soundscapes, he’s always exploring something new. Looking ahead, expect to see Bad Robot Brain bringing his imaginary universe into the real world through comics, games, trading cards, and exhibitions full of weird, touchable things.
