Lazlo’s Brewery & Grill

I recently had the distinct pleasure of working on the website for one of my favorite local restaurants, Lazlo’s Brewery & Grill. Lazlo’s is known for two things, great steak and great beer, and that is the essence of what I wanted to carry over to their web presence.

Having eaten at Lazlo’s numerous times myself, I immediately had a rough idea of what I wanted the site to look like, something warm and inviting, that would make you want to run out for a juicy steak, a bowl of their tasty beer cheese soup, and a tall glass of Empyrean Ale to wash it all down. In order to achieve this, I selected a palate of warm browns and reds, set off with golden accents—most of which were picked directly from photos of Empyrean Ales that the client provided. I also sought to bring the Lazlo’s experience to the web by paying homage to the chalkboards mounted behind their front counters, as well as the typographic accents found in their menus, in the interior navigation design.

One aspect of the site that I am most proud of is the primary navigation, which I used to enhance the luminescent quality of the site. To create the glowing rollover menu with smoothly animated drop downs I had to marry a couple of jQuery plugins which I had never used before on their own let alone together. The first being Joel Birch’s Superfish dropdown menu and the other being Dave Shea’s CSS Sprites2. As a JavaScript novice I spent countless hours trying to perfect this effect, tweaking small parts of their respective javascript, and completely taking apart and reassembling the CSS that drives both of these effects. In the end I came up with something that is roughly 95% the way I’d intended. I will however keep at it in my free time since I do plan on using this technique again in the future.

  1. Funny that you’ve designed their website. I remember back about 2 years ago I approached them to see if they could use my services. They were not ready. But I’m so glad to see they found a sweet designer such as yourself. Normally it’s the other way around.

    Sweet site!
