Will Songsmith Be a GarageBand Killer

If this (ridiculously long) commercial is any indication, No.

I like to avoid falling into the whole Mac elitism thing, and thus try not to bag on Microsoft too much. But sometimes you just can’t help yourself. Which is the case with this god-awful plug for their “user-friendly” music application, Songsmith. I’m not about to remark on the application itself, since I don’t run windows, and my music making abilities are nil.

What I will do is fall on my ass laughing at this video. I mean, are they serious? Did the creators of this video actually think this steamy pile would sell product? The acting/dialog is completely unnatural even for commercial acting, and the scenario is insane. I’d like to see a show of hands the ad-men and jingle-writers out there who would plop down at their local coffee shop to lay down vocals on their laptop’s built in microphone.

For me the real kicker is about 1:55 into it when the obligatory hip young kid say, “Microsoft huh, so it’s pretty easy to use.” Has anyone ever equated Windows and it’s applications with being user-friendly, besides Microsoft? What he should’ve said was, “Microsoft huh, so it’s frustrating as fuck to use because the application handicaps you with it’s inane presets and limited functionality.” I can see it now, people going on murderous rampages because the little animated musical note guy made them feel like an ass one too many times.

What Songsmith really sounds like is a neat little experiment in digital voice-pattern recognition that got shoehorned into a “easy-to-use” product, that will ultimately only appeal to sad American Idol wannabes and Sunday school teachers.
