So there was this bizarre little indie movie that came out last year called Repo: The Genetic Opera. The film, based on Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich’s quirky little musical, was most notable for it mesh of classical and industrial music as well as the fact that it starred the likes of Paris Hilton and Nivek Ogre. Despite minimal studio support, Repo managed to become an under-culture hit through the support of it’s fans. A little known fact is that prior to being picked up by Lionsgate, the film had been shopped around to other major studios, including Universal Pictures. Apparently, Universal liked the concept of organ-snatching repo-men that they decided to blatantly rip off the musical and turn it into the big-budget action flick, Repo Men, starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker. sigh I can already see to master-piece filling the mid-saturday-afternoon television slot come next summer.
