Just a day after some dirty scoundrels from Durham University said too much coffee will have you seeing and hearing things that aren’t there, our friends from across the pond defend the dark lady’s good name.
Some Finnish and Swedish researchers have found that drinking a moderate amount of coffee, 3 – 5 cups a day, can help fend of the onset Alzheimer’s until later in life. While they haven’t pinpointed exactly which chemicals in coffee were beneficial they did point out that coffee is rich in antioxidants. Coffee also helps to prevent diabetes, which is often a precursor to Alzheimer’s. Although, probably not with the bit of sugar I use.
When questioned about the reported hallucinations caused by the caffeine in coffee Miia Kivipelto had this to say:
I guess this shows that you shouldn’t exaggerate,” Kivipelto said when asked about the British study, pointing out that her research showed “insignificant” benefits to drinking more than five cups of coffee a day when it came to protecting against dementia.
“Too much is simply too much.
