Army of Two Mask Customization

EA has recently unveiled a new component to their upcoming title Army of Two: The 40th Day, the ability to customize your in-game character’s mask. And according to the video from the fine folks over at Gamespot, players can use the online Mask & Armor Creator to smear rainbow sprinkled clown-poo all over their face.

Actually, I tried the Mask & Armor Creator out for myself, and despite what the video shows, you can in fact create some pretty bad-ass looking designs (Dwight K Shrute anyone?). The creator is just a simple vector editor, with a collection of built-in shapes that you can recolor, and tweak. You can also add text, and it even looks like you can upload your own emblem. So all in all, this is a pretty cool utility for people who do care about the appearance of their character. Since the utility ties into you EA account—much like Dragon Age Journeys— you will be able to take your online creations with you into the game. The ad man in me sees this coming in handy during sponsored competitive play, with players being able to slap on their sponsor mask before heading into a match.

If you know me then you also know I’m not much for these realistic military shooters, as they depend too heavily on online multiplayer. Since I’m unwilling to pay M$ for the privilege of playing online, I stick to single-player titles. In spite of this, I thoroughly enjoyed the first Army of Two’s single player campaign. Aside from being rather short, it was challenging enough, and the weapon customization sated my OCD side. But as a designer, the one thing I wanted to do the entire time I was playing was to customize the hockey masks. Sure, there’s a wide selection of designs built into the game, but there’s nothing like customizing the look of your character to be entirely unique for you. This new Mask & Armor Creator has actually peaked my interest in checking out Army of Two: The 40th Day which hits the streets on January 12th.
