It looks as if Syfy is working over Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s tale Alice in Wonderland in much the same way they did The Wizard of Oz with their 2007 mini-series Tin Man. Which is to say they are projecting the story into the future/present while re-imagining the general plot and characters for an adult audience.
The basic premise is that the White Rabbits abduct people from the real world so they can have their emotional energy sucked out by the Red Queen—Kathy Bates—in her casino. The story centers around Alice—played by Caterina Scorsone—as she and The Mad Hatter—Andrew Lee Potts—try to rescue her boyfriend from the Red Queen.
The project is being headed up by writer/director Nick Willing, who I will admit did a pretty good job with Tin Man. Tin Man wasn’t an epic masterpiece, but it did stand out above the usual sub-B made for TV castoffs that typically haunt the Syfy network’s weekend lineup. So here’s hoping that Willing can pull it off again when Alice hits your TV screen in December.
