So I was talking about the new Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition with Jim and Josh this morning. Having already played the original release, Jim and I gave Josh a resounding thumbs up when he asked whether or not it was worth playing. After explaining the cool “Infinities” story arch that succumbing to the dark side opens up, Josh asked, “Which is your favorite storyline/side to play?”
Now this question warranted a fairly straight forward answer since the gameplay is exactly the same and currently the only reward for kneeling to the Emperor is an alternate ending cinematic and fancy armor. It’s a wash, play the last level twice to see how each ending pans out.
But this fairly innocent question did bring to mind something that I’ve given a bit of thought over the course of my Star Wars fandom, and thus the Question of the Week:
Who would you side with, the Jedi or the Sith?
Personally, I’d throw my chips in with the Sith. Aside from the wicked face tattoos and lightning fingers, there is something appealing about an order that derives it’s success from harnessing the power that naturally lives within one’s self. Unlike the Jedi who are in constant conflict with their emotions, the Sith acknowledge and nourish their natural emotional states—using that power to achieve their goals.
The Jedi have to maintain a harmonious state of mind all-the-time. So, if someone blows up your uncle’s farm and tries to blame it on Jawas your only recourse is to suck it up and get on with the mission at hand. With all the swallowing of emotions that these guys do it’s no wonder so many of them fall off of the bandwagon.
Now, I can’t say that I agree with the whole power-mad planet smashing mentality that the Sith have going on, but I have always been a fan of self-empowerment. I’m of the opinion that most people rely too heavily on outside forces to guide their destinies. Waiting for others to show you the way, give you a leg up, or hold your hand while you pee will leave you an emotional cripple suckling your banky while the world goes on without you. Which is exactly why the Self-Help craze of the 90′s was such a hit.
Now that I’ve briefly made my case, who would you side with? Those namby-pamby do-gooders, the Jedi, or the ultimate in galactic bad-assitude, the Sith?
Note: All of the fanboys out there who will argue that the Sith emblem that I used in the above image is not the “official emblem” can suck it. I used the Quad-Sun emblem of the Sith Empire because it was more proportionate to the Jedi Emblem, so it worked better in this context.
